Grinding versus pulling a stump

Pulling a stump out of the ground with a machine leaves a large crater and is rarely practical near homes. Grinding is the usual choice: a rotating cutting wheel chews the stump down several inches below grade, leaving a pile of wood chips and soil. Larger root flares can be followed out a few feet if needed. Ask how deep they plan to go, especially if you want to plant a new tree or pour a slab nearby.

What happens to the hole

The ground-up material usually fills the hole loosely. As it breaks down, the spot can sink, so many homeowners rake out most of the chips, add topsoil and seed or sod. Ask whether chip removal and backfill are part of the price or extra.

Old stumps and new problems

Stumps left in Brooksville's sandy and clay soils can sprout suckers, attract termites and slowly rot into soft spots. Some species, like laurel oak and camphor, are especially quick to sprout. Grinding usually stops most regrowth, though a few stubborn roots may need to be cut back again later.

How it is priced

Companies may price by the stump, by the inch of diameter, or by the hour, often with a minimum charge. Several stumps on the same trip often cost less each. See rough estimate ranges in our cost guide.

Pair it with a removal

If you still have the tree, ask for stump grinding to be quoted together with the tree removal. Taking out lots of trees and brush? See land clearing.

Common questions

How deep does grinding go?

Typical residential grinding goes a few inches to around a foot below grade. Ask for more depth if you plan to build or replant right there.

Can a stump be ground close to a fence or wall?

Usually yes, with care. Very tight spots may leave a small portion that has to be removed by hand.

Is it a good idea to burn out a stump?

Burning is slow, smoky and can be restricted or unsafe in dry weather. Grinding is the quicker and safer choice for most yards.
